The Three Sisters of Glencoe

The Three Sisters of Glencoe are actually the shoulders of Bidean nam Bian that overshadows the famous Glen Coe. In this image the sun breaks through the heavy cloud above Coire nan Lochan on the southern side of Glen Coe.

Glen Coe is one of the most famous places in the Highlands of Scotland. Partly, I think, because the main road runs alongside the glen itself and it looks spectacular! From the car window you can see the snow covered peaks and the dramatic shapes of the mountains. There are also a number of parking and viewing places where you can sit and look, or make your way down to the River Coe at the base of the Glen.

Before the A82 was constructed there was 'the old road'. A place where you could just pull up and camp.

However Glencoe has a more dangerous past

In years past the Corries of Glencoe (for example the mini valley seen between two of the shoulders) were used by the Clan Macdonald to hide their cattle from marauders. The clans were constantly struggling for supremacy, and survival, and food was often in short supply. Interestingly, the hidden cattle were previously stolen from other clans in the first place! The Cories of the Three Sisters provided an unusual and safe place to hide their loot.

Behind the sisters seen in the image is Coire Gabhail which runs almost parallel to Glencoe itself. Coire Gabhail means Corrie of the Bounty, or The Hollow of Capture.
