Autumn In Martinshaw Woods

I often walked in Martinshaw Woods when we lived in Leicestershire. We moved to the county in 2010 and set about exploring the local area. This woodland was not at all far from our home and provided a lovely walk in summer. In winter the pathways were boggy and, without getting very muddy, impassable.

Martinshaw Woods

Martinshaw Woods is a strip of woodland sandwiched between the M1 motorway and the village of Ratby. The photograph shows one of the pathways that was closest to the village. In fact, the entrance to the woods was only a few minutes walk from the very spot I set up my camera. On this particular day, the morning sunlight was streaming in from the right (the village side). It was not that early yet a hazy autumnal mist still hung in the air.

As I looked along the leafy pathway the forest reminded me of the interior of a great cathedral. Lines of trees formed elegant pillars that came together into the canopy above.

Should you visit this cathedral woodland, enjoy the walk. Squirrels scattering across your pathway are a common sight as you make your way around the circular pathway. Straying off the beaten track is thoroughly recommended! Little glades and hidden animal trails are a delight to follow.

Once you have returned to the carpark you can always nip into Ratby and have some fish and chips at the chip shop across from the library. Delicious!
