Peak District Photography
Solomons TempleThere is no need for long-distance travel to the Middle East - Solomon's Temple is here on the edge of the Peak District!Sadly, it was not built by King Solomon at all. The Tower, built by Solomon Mycock, is built on top of an iron age barrow and overlooks the Spa Town of Buxton. The Temple (or Tower) was built as a folly, much like Old John in Leicestershire. The difference here is that the townspeople paid for most of the work by donating their own money. The foundation stone was laid in May 1896 by the MP of High Peak at the time Colonel Sidebottom. Just four months later the tower was opened by Victor Cavendish.Today we would never be able to build upon a bronze age barrow 1440 feet above sea level, but residents of Buxton thought that this was appropriate. From the top of the Tower you can look out across Buxton and Grinlow. In fact, the alternative name of Solomon's Temple is Grinlow Tower.Although not a 'day out' in itself Solomon's Temple is a must visit when you are in Buxton. The hill climb to the Tower is not too steep from the layby on Grinlow Road. You can also walk up from Poole's Cavern carpark through the woods and lime kilns (signposted). The image was taken at midday (not the best for landscape photographs) in this dry summer spell, hence the brown grass! You can see Buxton to the right of the Tower (you should be able to make out the Dome).Have a great day and let me know if you visit Solomon's TemplePeter
