FAQs About Your Portrait Photography
Often clients have questions that I can easily answer here online. If your question is not covered, please get in contact.
What is Fine Art Portrait photography?
Fine Art Portrait photography (sometimes described as "décor photography" or "photo décor”) is created by the photographer as an artist and not just by the camera. The photographer’s vision is central to the resulting shot. Fine art portrait photography is intended for display, usually as wall art.
What is a studio style portrait?
Studio style portraits involve backdrops, lights and props. They stand in contrast to lifestyle portraits which place people in real-life situations, for example in their garden.
What kinds of portrait product are available?
You can purchase your portraits as:
Fine Art Prints - 8x10 inches upwards
Framed Wall Art
Fine Art Books / Favola
With each order a complementary digital copy is given to you of your purchased portraits.
What is a fine art print?
Fine Art Giclée prints are a high-quality archival print on fine art watercolour paper.
Your print will be at ‘gallery quality’ and be on cotton at around 300 gsm. The exact weight and kind of paper will depend on the finish that you are looking for.
Each print is handmade by a team of professional printers I have worked with since 2017 and your prints are rated at 100+ years before any noticeable fading or colour change.
What frames do you carry?
I carry a wide range of modern and traditional frames. My mobile case of frames, that I bring with me, gives you a good idea of what to expect.
Some of my traditional frames are made to order from scratch and can take four to six weeks to construct. Although this is a long wait it does give you ultimate control over every aspect of your frame, everything from washing with colour to adding genuine gold leaf.
All frames are glazed with white water non-reflective glass.
Frames prices are set on size category to make things simple for me! This price is regardless of mount or type of frame. Adding gold to the frame or photo will attract an additional cost.
All frames are handmade by a team who are Fine Art Trade Guild Commended.
What is an Italian canvas?
The most noble and classic form of artistic printing finds a new look thanks to the Italian Canvas. The warmth of the natural fibre cotton fabric, the deep saturated colours, the textile texture that charms at first touch, are all assembled to perfection on a non-deformable planar element. Soft but doesn’t stretch like other products currently on the market. Design and tradition unite to amaze you.
Exclusive anti-glare “Touch” finishing is built to last over time, for an amazing feedback each time you will look at it, each time you will touch it. A silky surface, completely anti-glare for deep blacks and rich colours. This print is unalterable over time and ensures museum-like quality.
The unibody wooden panel, designed for our wall art, offers beauty and pure class to your entire work of art. There are no staples or unsightly mounting.
What advantage is there to being at home rather than a studio?
Being at home for your portrait photography is a huge advantage when it comes to your children; everything is a lot more relaxed. We are able to include favourite toys, get changed into a range of outfits, include family pets, and have breaks. At a studio you would not naturally think of a young girl with her rabbit, or an enthusiastic boy showing off his Lego creations. We can play with bubbles, eat cookies and even have some singing!
I hate having my photo taken - how will you help me?
As your portrait photographer I'll be coaching you throughout the session on everything you need to know. Expression, angles, positioning, hair, all of the stuff which you don't need to worry about. The aim of the session is not to just get some photos, but to capture beautiful memories and I’ll spend as little or as long as is needed in order to get them. I love shooting portraits, so I'm in no rush to finish our shoot.
Each person gets a little instruction on how to look great in front of the camera for their face shape and body type. We might get there quickly, which is great, or it might take a little longer to get there, but that's fine too, because we're not clock watching. So either way, we've still got plenty of time to do all of those outfit changes, portrait combinations etc.
Family Portrait Photographer
It's 9am on Tuesday morning. Two year old Lucy has just spilled her orange juice down the front of her best dress, and four year old Harry is getting up close and personal with Misty the family dog, who has just come in after a good roll in the freshly cut grass.
Harry's favourite blue shirt (the only one he will wear at the minute) is covered in grass and dog hair...and you have to be at the portrait photographer's studio in less than an hour! You've been putting this portrait sitting off for months because Lucy can't sit still for more than 30 seconds, but the grandparents' golden wedding is coming up and you really wanted to give them a family portrait.
Now imagine this...
It's 9am on Tuesday morning. Peter the Portrait Photographer is arriving at 10am. You had a lovely chat with him last week when he came to visit for your pre shoot consultation and the kids loved him. You have already discussed which family portraits would be special to capture - individuals and the whole family. He is going to stay for as much of the day as you need, so Harry's shirt can have a quick spin in the washer drier and there's plenty of time to change Lucy into her second best dress. Misty can play in the garden, but Peter loves dogs and will probably want to take her photo too!
So, instead of stressing and rushing and panicking about finding a parking space, you pop that shirt into the machine and put the kettle on...
"But I want my family portraits to look like they were taken in a professional photographer studio," I hear you cry. Never fear - we bring backdrops, lights, the whole shebang!
Lucy can wear six different dresses, Harry can sit on his rocking horse (that his grandparents gave him for his birthday), and you can be confident that Peter will capture you all at your very best. Your portraits will be amazing.
